Assessments of LitStrange

Picture
Literature: The Strange and Mysterious is a course that hopes to introduce avid readers to new genres of material, while inspiring apprehensive readers to intriguing content. In order to achieve this, the course operates on differentiated of assessment to gage understanding.
Formative Assessment

In LitStrange, understanding is evaluated through multiple forms of discussion. This includes: small group discussion, large group discussion, Lit Circles, Think-Pair-Share, and Socratic Seminar. We also use journals as a differentiated way to check understanding of a text or novel. This allows different avenues of participation for all students.
Summative Assessment

Though understanding is essential to a literature course, so is the practice of recollection and reading for details. To assess these practices, we provide weekly reading quizzes. Each novel in a Unit will contain about four quizzes. This allows an opportunity to gage a students progression with a text. Are they reading to finish, or reading to understand? This answers that question. Also, after each unit we have a unit test. This will contain higher level questioning, as well as plot recollection.

A peak into our large group discussions in LitStrange.
