Literature: The Strange and Mysterious Activities

Suspense Scenes

In a course that focuses on Science Fiction, Horror, Fantasy, and Suspense, it is important for students to understand the breakdown of each genre. After reading the novel, Kindred, students were put into groups and asked to create and develop their own suspense scenes. Staying true to the four elements of suspense (Set-up, Build-up, distraction and pay-off) students had to format and compose an original script, as well as film and edit the scene. They were encouraged to test their creativity and originality through ideas, music, collaboration, and of course, elements of suspense. Below is the full assignment handout and examples.
Kailyn, Sophia, and Jessica created their scene around a girl who believes she is being followed while driving home, however she realizes that it was all a misunderstanding. Suspense is created through their use of music, tension, camera angles and a clear distraction. All the elements were present within the script and video. The girls worked together the develop an original, and suspenseful scene! Enjoy the script (left) and video (below).
